The Soul of Vesuvius in a Bottle: The Wines of Bosco de' Medici
There is a quiet thread that connects the black volcanic soils of Vesuvius, the ancient history of Pompeii, and the careful work of those who turn grapes into stories. At Bosco de’ Medici, that thread has a name: Vincenzo Mercurio.
One of Southern Italy’s most respected wine consultants and founder of Le Ali di Mercurio, Vincenzo joined the project in 2015 with a clear vision: to make wines that speak not of the winemaker, but of the place. “Wine is like a painting,” he says. “I study the differences in each vineyard deeply and transform them into colours on a palette to use on the canvas. The best wines, I believe, are those capable of telling the story of their origins.”
Those origins, in this case, are extraordinary. Bosco de’ Medici’s vineyards span eight hectares on the slopes of Vesuvius, planted with indigenous ungrafted varieties — Piedirosso, Aglianico, Caprettone, and Falanghina — grapes that have thrived in volcanic soils for centuries and carry within them the fingerprint of this unique landscape. The unrepeatable climatic conditions and distinctive terrain call for an almost “artistic” interpretation, in order to create wines that honestly express their place of origin.
The resulting range of labels is the product of ongoing micro-vinifications and continuous experimentation. The Lacryma Christi Bianco, an elegant expression of the native Caprettone grape, delivers volcanic minerality and a striking freshness. The Lacryma Christi Rosso, from Piedirosso and Aglianico, is a wine of intense character — soft tannins, a long finish that evokes stone and ash. The Pompeii Rosso rounds out the range with a more approachable but equally rooted personality. Part of the winemaking takes place in underground terracotta vessels, used for both maceration and ageing — a direct tribute to the Roman winemaking tradition uncovered in the nearby Pompeii excavations.
The winery’s philosophy rests on sustainability, respect for nature, and the values of biodynamic culture, so that each wine becomes not merely a product, but a bridge between history, territory, and the future.
