July in the Vineyard: What the Vines Are Doing Right Now

Untitled design 1 - July in the Vineyard: What the Vines Are Doing Right Now - Bosco de' Medici Wine Resort - Pompei

A Summer Letter from Our Estate on the Slopes of Mount Vesuvius

There is a particular quality to the light in our vineyard in July. By mid-morning it is already bright and intense, pressing down on the leaves with quiet persistence. The vines do not seem to mind. They have been here far longer than we have, rooted in volcanic soil that has absorbed the Mediterranean sun for centuries, and they know exactly what to do.
What Is Happening in the Vineyard Right Now
By July, the vines at Bosco de’ Medici have completed flowering, and the tiny berries—still firm and vividly green—have already formed and continue to develop. This is the fruit set stage, when each fertilized flower becomes a grape, forming the clusters that will eventually be harvested.

As summer progresses, the first signs of veraison begin to appear—the stage when the berries gradually change in both color and composition as they move toward ripening. For Piedirosso, our flagship red variety, this means a slow transformation from green to the deep red-purple hues that precede full maturity. For Caprettone, the white grape that has become a symbol of this volcanic landscape, the berries gradually lose their intense green color, preparing to develop the brighter golden tones of ripeness. The change is so gradual that it is almost imperceptible, until one morning you walk between the rows and realize the vineyard has quietly entered a new season.
This evolution is shaped by the unique characteristics of the Vesuvian terroir. Our eight hectares of vineyards lie between 250 and 300 meters (820–980 feet) above sea level, with predominantly southern exposure and views stretching toward the Bay of Naples on the clearest days. The volcanic soil—sandy, mineral-rich, and distinguished by the presence of leucite, a characteristic mineral of Vesuvius lava—provides exceptional natural drainage while encouraging deep root development. The wide temperature swings between warm summer days and cooler nights, together with the constant influence of sea breezes, promote slow, balanced ripening, preserving both acidity and aromatic complexity.
The Vines That Grow Only Here
Walking through our vineyard in July, those who know what to look for will notice something increasingly rare: many of our vines are own-rooted, growing on their original roots rather than being grafted onto American rootstocks—a practice that became standard across almost all of the world’s vineyards after the phylloxera epidemic of the nineteenth century.
The sandy volcanic soils of Mount Vesuvius make it extremely difficult for phylloxera to survive, allowing own-rooted vines to continue thriving here today. It is a remarkable and precious condition, enabling our Piedirosso, Aglianico, Caprettone, and Falanghina—some from historic vineyards—to express an unbroken connection with this volcanic land.
Even in Roman times, the slopes of Mount Vesuvius were celebrated for their winemaking tradition. The poet Martial praised this landscape as a place of renowned vineyards and exceptional wines. Today, that same viticultural heritage continues on the very same volcanic soils that have shaped the character and identity of this land for centuries.
What the Summer Heat Means for the Wine
It is often assumed that heat is simply the enemy of great wine, and that only cool summers produce exceptional vintages. On the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, the reality is more nuanced.
The warm temperatures of July and August encourage the grapes to accumulate sugars. At the same time, the marked difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures, together with the constant influence of sea breezes, allows the fruit to ripen gradually while preserving freshness, acidity, and aromatic balance. When these elements come together in harmony, the grapes reach harvest with concentration, structure, and elegance.
Our winemaker, Vincenzo Mercurio, closely monitors every stage of ripening throughout the summer. The harvest date is never fixed in advance; instead, it is determined by observing the grapes every day, because every vintage is different, and every year tells a story that can never be repeated.
What Comes Next
Over the coming weeks, the berries will continue to grow, soften, and complete their journey toward ripeness. The vineyard will slowly change its fragrance as anticipation for harvest builds.
From the second half of September through October, the harvest will begin, following the natural ripening rhythm of each grape variety. Hands moving through the rows, crates filling with clusters, the winery coming back to life—everything the year’s work has patiently led toward.
Come and taste what this volcanic land knows how to transform into wine. We are here, on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, ready to welcome you.
