The Amalfi Coast: where the sea meets the sky
There is a place in the world where nature seems to have gone too far. Where mountains plunge into the sea without asking permission, lemons scent the air even in winter, and every bend in the road reveals a view that takes your breath away. That place is the Amalfi Coast — and once you have seen it, you never quite forget it.
Just forty minutes from Pompeii — and from our resort — the Amalfi Coast is one of those journeys you make wide-eyed and phone in hand, unable to stop taking photographs. But no photograph can ever truly capture its scale, its colours, the smell of sea salt mingled with citrus, the sound of waves breaking against the cliffs.
Positano: the village painted on the sea
The first stop has to be Positano. Its pastel-coloured houses cling to the hillside as if someone had placed them there by accident — and yet they have been there for centuries, solid and beautiful. Walking down to the beach through the narrow alleyways, past ceramic shops and the scent of limoncello, is already an experience in itself. Arriving at the sea and looking around is something else entirely.
Positano is the right place to slow down. To sit in a café with a view, order something cool and simply let the sea look back at you.
Amalfi: history and salt in the air
Amalfi was once a powerful and proud maritime republic, and you can still feel it as you walk through the centre. The Cathedral of Sant’Andrea, with its Arab-Norman façade dominating the piazza, tells of centuries of trade, of voyages, of worlds that once met right here. All around, the alleyways hum with voices — tourists, locals carrying shopping, the everyday rhythm of a town that has never forgotten its past.
It is worth climbing up to the Convent of San Francesco — now a hotel — just for the view from above. And then coming back down, and ordering a lemon granita. It is practically compulsory.
Ravello: silence above the clouds
If Positano is noise and colour, Ravello is silence. Perched three hundred metres above sea level, it feels like another world entirely. Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone have gardens suspended over the void, with terraces that look out over a horizon so wide it seems endless.
Ravello is where Wagner composed part of Parsifal. Where Gore Vidal lived for decades. There is something in the air up there — that rare quiet, that light that shifts from hour to hour — that explains why certain people return every year, and eventually never leave.
Setting out from Pompeii: the advantage of knowing where to sleep
The Amalfi Coast is easy to reach from Pompeii, and it is one of the reasons many of our guests choose Bosco de’ Medici as their base for exploring this part of Campania.
